The Garden City is lucky enough to boast some of the finest brass and pipe bands in the land. While most of the Sunday Bandstand performances showcase the talents and flair of individual bands, if you get to the contest at English Park on 24 Feb you'll experience a stunning array of pipe bands from all over the South Island!

Canterbury Provincial Pipe Band Contest, English Park, Cranford St (all day, ticketed):
a veritable plethora of pipes can be heard at this contest - featuring a stunning array of pipe bands from all over the South Island! Organised by the Caledonian Royal Stewart and the Caledonian Royal Stewart Balmorals pipe bands.

Sun 2nd Mar 2008 (various times)

Band Rotunda, Botanic Gardens (2-3 pm): Addington Brass

Cathedral Square (12.30-4 pm):
Various pipe bands including the Caledonian Royal Stewart Balmorals perform in the Square as they continue to gear up for the Nationals in Auckland!

Scarborough Reserve, Sumner (2-3 pm):
Sumner Silver Band

Stedfast Brass Band

Cathedral Square:
Linwood Salvation Army Band

Allandale Domain, just outside Governors Bay:
Sumner Silver Band. This performance is part of the Governors Bay  Fête, which runs from 11.30 am until 3.30 pm.

Tip Top Kite Day
Tip Top Kite Day brings all the excitement, colour and spectacle of hundreds of kites dancing, ducking, and diving around the skies over New Brighton Beach.
